This small group lesson introduces children to the themes of empathy, inclusion, and understanding through the first book in the Feeling Left Out series. It includes a read-aloud, brief discussion, and simple art project to help children express their feelings and reflect on the importance of including others.
Materials Needed:
Group Size: Small group (4-6 children)
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
Lesson Introduction:
Begin by gathering the children and introducing the book. Explain that the story is about a character who feels left out and that the group will talk about how everyone can help others feel included. Ask the children if they’ve ever felt left out and let them know it's a common feeling.
Read-Aloud:
Read the book Feeling Left Out to the group. As you read, pause occasionally to ask questions like, “How is the character feeling?” and “What could others do to help?” This will encourage the children to think about empathy and inclusion.
Discussion:
After reading, have a short discussion. Ask the group how they think the character felt and what they could do to help someone who feels left out. List their ideas on a whiteboard or chart paper to visualize their thoughts.
Art Project:
For the art activity, ask the children to create an "Inclusion Poster." Each child will draw a picture of people playing or working together, making sure no one is left out. Encourage them to use bright colors and show kindness in their drawings.
Lesson Recap:
Gather the children back together and ask if anyone would like to share their poster. Encourage them to explain how their drawing shows everyone being included. Remind them that small actions can make a big difference in helping others feel part of the group.
This simple lesson serves as an example of how the Feeling Left Out series can be used in a small group setting. The full series offers expanded lesson plans and activities for larger classrooms, schools, and libraries.
